A Need for Beauty
-O God, to the farthest corners of the planet people will stand in awe, startled and stunned by your signs and wonders. Sunrise brilliance and sunset beauty both take turns singing their songs of joy to you. (Ps. 65:8) I spent last weekend serving on a prison ministry team that presented concepts… Read More -
God Volunteers
-I start with this gem from A.W. Tozer: “God has a voluntary relation to everything he has made, but he has no necessary relation to anything outside of himself…to God alone nothing is necessary….Any motion in His direction is elevation for the creature; away from Him, descent.” –from Knowledge of… Read More -
Reset to Clean
-I love Mondays. Yes, I really do. I also love a new year for the same reason I love Mondays. It’s a new start. There’s been a period of relative rest and reflection, and then—a reset, a fresh start with a new set of goals and priorities and activities. It’s… Read More -
Commendation
-Recently as I was finishing my reading of the book of Romans, I was struck by the honor, respect and tenderness in Paul’s tone, and found some useful application to our respective ministries today. Paul’s letter to the Romans remains one of the finest pieces of literature ever penned in… Read More -
Power is Not a Fruit of the Spirit
-There were several topics in my writing queue this week, but what I was moved to blog about today came spontaneously from a conversation yesterday with my dear friend Charla. She was telling me how touched she was by the new movie about Mr. Rogers, and how inspired by the… Read More -
How Can There Be Peace?
-King Joram demanded, “Do you come in peace, Jehu?”Jehu replied, “How can there be peace as long as the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother, Jezebel, are all around us?” (2 Kings 9:22) The biblical stories of kingly successions in Judah and Israel are not pretty, but replete with political… Read More -
Our Boasting
-I’ve been reading about the kings of Israel and Judah, and this morning came across a story about King Ahab, the king of Israel, when threatened by one of his enemies, Ben-hadad: “A warrior putting on his sword for battle should not boast like a warrior who has already won.”* In… Read More -
Receiving Bread from Heaven
-The extended narrative of Israel’s deliverance from Egyptian slavery and her journey through the wilderness is a deep, rich vein of truth to mine and apply. I’d love to teach a whole course on it, but for now, I will draw your attention, dear reader, to the story of the… Read More -
As Usual
-I came across a most striking passage about the prophet Daniel this week. An exiled youth from Israel, he quickly rose in the ranks of Babylon to become one of King Darius’ top administrators. He made the other bureaucrats look bad because of his excellent skills and impeccable character. They… Read More -
A Walker's Creed
-God came walking through the garden in the cool of the day and spoke to his first listeners. I will walk, because he first walked. I will listen for his voice. Enoch walked faithfully with God, until God whisked him away. I will walk away from death and into the… Read More -
You're Not Normal
-On the journey through Exodus, it doesn’t take long to get to the epic contest of wills between Moses and Pharaoh (Ex. 7-12). We find Moses’ repeated appeals to Pharaoh to let the Hebrews go to the wilderness to worship their God, and Pharaoh’s stubborn refusals, culminating in ten horrific… Read More -
Bullies and Babies
-Did I get your attention with that title? What I am led to share with you today is an illustration of why I have called my site, “Scripture Comes to Life.” Yesterday morning I went to counsel with two of the men in the re-entry ministry where I serve. Both… Read More
The Scripture Comes to Life Blog
One of my greatest joys is reading and studying the Bible. While I do so, I pray that God will give me supernatural insight I’ve never seen or heard preached before. He has faithfully done so. A teacher at heart, my study is driven by a desire to teach and share the wonderful truths he reveals.
I’ve written on a wide variety of themes and topics. The blogs are searchable by topic and with keywords.
As you read, may Scripture come to life for you in many marvelous and helpful ways.
